Adam Beck completed a ²Ñ²¹²õ³Ù±ð°ù’s in Tourism and Hospitality at BU and is now Director of Food and Beverage at Jumeirah Al Qasr and Dar Al Masyaf in Dubai.
Here, he shares his reflections on studying at BU and his advice for others wanting to break into the industry.
What made you decide to study tourism at BU?
I had already completed an undergraduate degree in Business Management and, due to my love for the hospitality industry, decided to return to university for my ²Ñ²¹²õ³Ù±ð°ù’s. I chose BU due to its reputation and the beauty of the local area, which also meant that it had a vibrant hotel and hospitality scene. The campus had a family feel, the lecturers were approachable, and it attracted students from around the world.
How did your studies prepare you for your future career?
The course was pragmatic and highly focused on real-world scenarios. The combination of theory and practice prepared me for the professional world, and really helped to develop my personal presentation skills and verbal reasoning.
How has your career developed since leaving BU?
I have lived and worked in England, Wales, Scotland, Australia, Dubai and Singapore – spending almost 10 years oversees. I am currently Director of Food and Beverage at Jumeirah Al Qasr in Dubai. Along the way I have been awarded the Olive Barnett Award (for those aged under 30 in the UK hospitality industry), was highly commended in the Younger Hotelier Middle East Awards and was recently named as a Leading Food and Beverage Director in the Middle East.
I love the diversity of the industry and the ability to work anywhere in the world. The daily buzz of working in the hospitality and the many mentors I have met along the way have been particular highlights. I have recently returned to studying by embarking on a Doctorate of Business Administration with Eaton Business School, Dubai.
What’s your advice to other students, or those thinking of studying tourism and hospitality?
Work hard and have fun! Your university years are the best years of your life so enjoy them to the fullest. Having said this, take your education seriously as it will carry you far beyond what you will ever imagine.
